The Anambra State Police Command has said that it has identified and arrested the lawless officer who was caught in a viral video brutalising a young man with a gun.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who made this known in a statement made available to journalists in Awka, the state capital on Tuesday said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, ordered immediate disciplinary proceedings to commence on the incident.
Reporters had reported how in the video posted on Instagram by a user, Simple Blog which went viral on Monday morning, the policeman was seen slapping and hitting the young man with a gun.
Reporters was not able to independently ascertain what led to the brutality and the location of the incident as of the time of filing this report.
But reacting to the video on X, the Nigerian Police Force Complaint Unit berated the action of the lawless officer and pleaded with the citizens to provide more information about the incident to enable the Force to mete out appropriate punishment on the erring officer.
Announcing that the erring officer had been identified and arrested, Ikenga said that the Command also invited the victim to come forward in order to help in facilitating the necessary procedures involved in the process.
“To this end, the CP reiterated that the command under his watch would not tolerate any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel and emphasised the need for Officers to be courageously calm when dealing with the civil populace especially when being provoked.
He also urges citizens to always respect the civil authority and be law-abiding.
“Further details shall be communicated, please,” the police spokesperson said.
