The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is seeking partnership with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), to promote women, adolescent girls and vulnerable group’s education.
The Mandate Secretary, Women Affairs, FCTA, Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, made the appeal when she visited the management of the university in Abuja on Thursday.
Benjamins-Laniyi said that the programme would focus on non-conventional and flexible education programmes that would enable women and young girls to acquire functional education.
She explained that the goal was in line with the Renewed Hope Initiative of the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu.
The Secretary emphasised the need to provide an innovative, conducive, and flexible curricular for adolescent girls, women, and vulnerable individuals across the six area councils of the FCT.
She said that the move became necessary considering the challenges women and girls faced in accessing traditional education systems.
Acknowledging NOUN’s credibility, flexibility, and affordability, the mandate secretary said that these qualities made the university a key partner.
She expressed optimism that the university’s programmes would accommodate the unique circumstances of women, young girls, and other vulnerable groups.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Olufemi Peters, expressed the institution’s readiness to partner with the secretariat to promote inclusive and accessible education.
Peters said that the partnership represents a significant step towards addressing educational disparities in societies and promote women’s empowerment.
He disclosed that the university has concluded plans to introduce a special course that would focus on professional caregiving skills called “Super Nannies”.
The programme, according to him, would empower individuals to contribute to the holistic development and well-being of children and families, and communities at large.
