The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has denied that the current epileptic power supply in Abuja is as a result of vandalisation of the Gwagwalada-Katampe transmission line.

TCN, in a statement on Saturday, stated that the low load allocation caused by low generation into the national grid.

According to the statement, TCN said it supplies Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) bulk power for FCT and environs through three major transmission lines to ensure flexibility and reliability.

It explained that the recent vandalisation of Gwagwalada-Katampe transmission line did not affect capability of TCN to wheel power as Shiroro-Katampe lines are sufficient to convey allocated power to Abuja.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria had said its 330 kV Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission Line had been destroyed by vandals.

This was contained in a statement issued in February by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, in Abuja.

Mbah said, “Bulk power supply flexibility and volume of power into Abuja have been reduced by 250 MW following the destruction of tower 70 on the TCN’s 330 kV Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission Line in the Federal Capital Territory.

The incident occurred on Monday at about 11:32pm. At the time of the incident, the Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission Line had tripped at the Gwagwalada Transmission Substation and trial reclosure by TCN operators failed, necessitating a physical patrol of the line. The TCN lines and patrol team discovered that the four tower footings of tower 70 were destroyed, causing the tower to stand on the ground, supported by conductors.’’

She said the TCN had mobilised to the site of the incident and has commenced an emergency repair of the damaged tower and its associated equipment.

Meanwhile, the management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) said the power outage currently being experienced was due to the stormy weather that damaged several critical equipment serving the areas.

“The Management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc. (AEDC) wishes to notify its esteemed customers in Kubwa Abuja: F01, Military Pension Board, Dantata Estate, Chikakore Community, Byazhin, Across, Arab Road, Mopol Barracks, Kubwa Extension III, FCDA Owners Occupier, Army Scheme, Phase 3, Phase 4, and environs, that the power outage currently being experienced is due to the stormy weather that has damaged several critical equipment serving these areas.

“Our team of engineers are currently working hard to rectify and restore the power supply soonest.
