Mohamed Salah was substituted off before half-time in Egypt’s African Cup of Nations clash against Ghana on Thursday.

The Liverpool star appeared to be experiencing discomfort in his left thigh and was unable to continue.

Salah, 31, handed the Egyptian armband to his teammate Ahmed Hegazy, whom he hugged, and was substituted off for Mostafa Fathi in injury time at the end of the first half.

Egypt boss Rui Vitoria said after the match: “We don’t know yet what the problem is. I hope it’s not a big problem.

Salah scored a last-minute penalty to rescue a 2-2 draw for Egypt in their opening AFCON group game against Mozambique on Sunday and is the talisman for his nation.

The forward left the pitch on Thursday with the game scoreless, but a long-range effort from Mohammed Kudus deep into stoppage time gave Ghana the lead before the break.

Salah is the Egyptian national team’s all-time record goal scorer, netting 54 goals in 98 international caps.

The forward is aiming to win his first title with Egypt, having been involved in the side who were runners-up in the AFCON in 2017 and 2021.
